EC Softball Team Posts Second Sweep of Marion Military

Feb. 27, 2013 -News Release: East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team recorded a second-straight double-header sweep of Marion Military Institute Tuesday in Decatur, cruising 12-2 in the opener and 6-3 in the second contest.

EC, now 8-4 overall, scored 11 runs in the first three innings of the opener, which was called due to the eight-run rule.

The Lady Diamond Warrior offense was highlighted in the first game by Brandon product Amber McBroom’s three-run homer and a two-run triple by LaJoya Griffin of Philadelphia. McBroom and Griffin completed the opener with three RBIs each.

Ty Buckley of Neshoba Central also had a productive outing at the plate by belting a triple and a double. She also scored twice.

Other sluggers were A.J. Peeler of Neshoba Central and Hayley Stephens of Union, two singles each; and Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville, Kristen Chipley of Leake Academy, Casey Cherry of Union and Malauri Robinson and Morgan Porter, both of Enterprise, singles each.

Peeler, Stephens, Cherry, Porter and Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale were credited with an RBI each.

Tenna Patterson picked up the win, allowing three hits and no earned runs. She fanned seven batters and walked two. Patterson is a sophomore from Lexington (Ala.) High School.

In the second contest, EC snapped a 2-2 tie by scoring two runs in the fifth inning and adding a pair of runs in the sixth for a 6-3 victory.

McBroom led the offense with two singles and two RBIs.

Other hitters were Chipley, two singles; Porter, double and two RBIs; Buckley, double and RBI; and Peeler, single and RBI.

Patterson picked up the win in relief. She allowed one earned run on two hits and walked three batters during her three innings on the mound. Starter Mary Sanders allowed two earned runs on three hits through four innings. She fanned two batters and walked a pair. Sanders is a product of Adams County Christian School.

The Lady Diamond Warriors posted earlier victories (9-4, 10-2) over Marion Military following a Feb. 26 doubleheader on the Marion, Ala., campus.

EC travels to Baton Rouge Community College Thursday, Feb. 28, for a pair of contests getting under way at 3 p.m. on the Baton Rouge campus.

East Central battles Holmes Community College Monday, March 4. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m. on the Decatur campus.
