Mann Addresses ECCC Black History Month Crowd

March 6, 2013 Cutline:The Rev. Marcus Mann is shown during his remarks at East Central Community College’s annual Black History Month Program held Feb. 27, 2013, in the Vickers Fine Arts Center on the Decatur campus. Mann, an ECCC alumnus and former basketball standout, acknowledged the many accomplishments of African-Americans and noted “there is more to our history than being a slave.” He especially urged the young people in attendance to “have pride” in themselves and to “always strive to be the best.” He also told those in attendance “to be thankful for what you have….life could be worse.” Mann, a product of South Leake High School, is an honor graduate of ECCC and member of the Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Mann also excelled in academics and basketball at Mississippi Valley State University, where he was graduated magna cum laude. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association but soon left the NBA for the ministry. Mann is pastor of Sylvarena Baptist Church in Brandon and serves as chaplain for Tyson Foods, Inc., in Forest. He is married to the former Veleka Slocum and they have a daughter, Genesis A’ Miyah Mann. (EC Photo)
