press release: Members of the Louisville Lions Club, in cooperation with the City of Louisville, have undertaken an expansion of their ongoing project of displaying U. S. Flags on special holidays. Lions Club President Michael Dowd announced that the club will expand the program to include displaying flags on the thirty steel light poles located in the median of the Louisville by-pass.

“This stretch of highway is designated by Mississippi Statute as ‘Veteran’s Memorial Drive’ and also as a ‘Blue Star Highway’ which honors all who have worn the uniforms of any branch of United States
Service,” Dowd said. “Earlier this year the city added beautiful banners to the street light structures on this stretch of highway and will soon be adding double flag brackets at the base of the poles. The Lions Club will sell subscriptions to honor or memorialize our sons and daughters who are serving or have served in the U. S. Military. Club members will place U. S. flags in these brackets for display the entire week in which Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day occurs each year. This will send an unmistakable message to those passing through our city that we love our veterans and appreciate the sacrifice they have made to preserve our freedom. It should be a spectacular sight for both north and south bound traffic on the by-pass.”

There are thirty poles and with double brackets enabling the club to honor sixty veterans. "Unfortunately, this limits the honorees to the first sixty for whom subscriptions are received. The cost is $25.00 per year and can be renewed on successive years. (The annual donation is considered a charitable contribution by the IRS for tax purposes.) A waiting list will be maintained for those who are not able to subscribe with the initial enrollment. A special dedication service will be held on Veteran’s Day (Monday, November 11,) which will mark the first day the flags are flown. They will remain on display for a full week and will be displayed again during the weeks of Memorial Day and Independence Day,” Dowd added. They will continue to be displayed each year during these weeks.

Louisville Mayor Will Hill expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for their continued efforts to promote patriotism, civic pride and beautification of the city. Mayor Hill said. “As I perform my official duties I’m often told by folks who have visited our city on national holidays how impressed they are with the U. S. flags that are on display in our city. The Louisville Lions Club has been displaying these flags for more than thirty years and, with this most recent project, has once again lived up to their motto of ‘We Serve,"

To honor the memory or life of a veteran with a flag on the by-pass, contact Mike Dowd at 662-803-7952. Again, only the first 60 subscriptions can be honored. Proceeds from the project will be used to support the Lions ongoing project of providing eye glasses for underprivileged children.
