ECCC Softball Squad Sweeps EMCC in Opener

Softball season began on a successful note for the East Central Community College Lady Warriors who earned a pair of victories from rival East Mississippi Community College in non-division matchups held during freezing temperatures Thursday, Feb. 6 on the Decatur campus.

EC cruised 10-3 in the opener and posted an 8-0 shutout to complete the sweep under second-year head coach Kristin Chaney.

Hayley Stephens led Lady Warrior hitters in the first contest with a double, single and two RBIs. She also scored twice.

Stephens is a sophomore infielder and product of Union High School.

Other hitters were Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale, double; and Mallory Turner of West Lauderdale, Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville and Ty Buckley of Neshoba Central, singles each. Turner, Porter, Beard and Skyler Simmons, a product of Bob Jones High School in Madison, Ala., were each credited with an RBI.

Kendra Wilson went the distance on the mound to record the victory. The sophomore hurler fanned five, walked three and allowed five hits in the seven-inning matchup.

Wilson is a product of South Lamar High School in Millport, Ala.

In the second contest, freshman hurler Makayla Kelly stymied the East MS offense by allowing just four hits and fanning three batters in the five-inning battle.

Kelly is a product of Nederland (Texas) High School.

EC’s offense was led by Karoline Holsonback, who belted two singles and collected three RBIs.

Holsonback is a freshman utility player from South Lamar High School in Kennedy, Ala.

Other sluggers were Porter, two singles; Simmons, single and two RBIs; Buckley and Kelly, single and RBI each; and Hopkins and Beard, singles each.
