Storm Victims Should be Aware of Fraud and Scams

Disasters such as the April 28 tornado that struck Winston County often bring out the best and the worst in people. In addition to the volunteerism and neighbor helping neighbor spirit that is predominant throughout the community, there is an ugly reality that there are those that will take advantage of those in need.

Beware of the fact that volunteer organizations will never ask for money for their services and all should have proper identification as an official volunteer group. You will not receive an invoice or a demand for payment from these groups. If this occurs, call law enforcement immediately.

FEMA Personnel who may visit your home will have proper identification. Ask for it and check it. DO NOT give any personal information such as social security numbers, bank account or credit card info, etc to any one other than an official FEMA/MEMA representative. If you have any doubts, don't provide that information.

SCAMS and FRAUD are often perpetrated upon the elderly. Check on and warn family members, friends and neighbors about the possibility of this type of crime.
