Updated List of Safety Concerns

The tornado took 10 Winston County lives and caused countless injuries, but the risk did not end with the winds.

Cuts, sunburn, nail punctures, heat exhaustion and chainsaw injuries remain concerns for recovery workers.

The Mississippi Department of Health is providing free tetanus shots at the county health department and the mobile emergency unit, located inj the south parking area of the Teter’s location on South Church Street.

Winston County supervisors issued a countywide burn ban in an effort to prevent additional stress on first responders. Recently damaged tree debris is extremely volatile and could result rapidly in an uncontrolled fire. Landowners may pile debris within 10 feet of public roads for county pick up or pile on their property for removal at a later date.

Make safety a top priority by wearing protective clothing such as long pants, hard sole shoes, gloves, hats and safety goggles when appropriate. Drink plenty of water and take breaks to prevent accidents cause by exhaustion. Sunscreen is also recommended.

Use caution around wood piles, which are popular environments for snakes.
