Dean Park Grand Re-Opening on Friday

At the request of the Dean Park Commission and the Friends of
Dean Park, Inc., the Board of Supervisors, voted Tuesday, September 2, 2014, to reopen Dean Park on Friday, September 5, 2014. Dean Park has been closed since April 28, 2014 after the tornado hit Winston County. Dean Park received a lot of damage, especially the loss of the beautiful pine trees. The park has been made safe by many volunteers and by employees hired via the National Emergency Grant (NEG) through the Friends of Dean Park, Inc and Supervisor Gloria Turnipseed. The Grand Opening will be Friday, September 5, 2014 from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
FRIENDS OF DEAN PARK, INC’S WILL HAVE THE GRAND OPENING OF THE “MISS RUTH’S BABIES’ CONCESSION STAND”, A MEMORIAL TO HER AS THE GUARDIAN ANGEL WHO IS CREDITED WITH SAVING THE LIFE OF 4 YEARS OLD ASHTYN MITCHELL AT HER DAY CARE CENTER. THE TWO OF THEM WERE THE ONLY ONES AT THE DAY CARE WHEN THE STORM HIT. MISS RUTH’S LIFE AND MISS RUTH’S DAYCARE CENTER WERE DESTROYED BY THE TORNADO ON APRIL 28, 2014 BUT NOT HER BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT THAT IS LEFT BEHIND FOR ALL THE CHILDREN THAT SHE CARED FOR DURING THE MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO WINSTON COUNTY.

A team of 4 volunteers from The Friends of Dean Park, Inc./Center Ridge Community were awarded a $3,000 grant through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in

April 2014. Their winning proposal, “Miss Ruth’s Babies’ Concession Stand” is aimed at increasing the use of Dean Park by:

-opening the concession stand by the Friends of Dean Park, Inc.

-renting it to others for various events and baseball games

The goal is to increase attendance at Dean Park; increase volunteerism; increase membership to Friends of Dean Park, Inc. and increase the community economically.
