Agricultural Field Day at Noxapater School

For the first time, the Winston County Self Help Youth Group (WCSHYG) hosted Agricultural Field Day at the Noxapater School with 65 students from the 4th, 5th and 6th grade on Monday, May 18, 2015.

The following agencies presented workshops to the eager to learn participants:

  • Mississippi Forestry Outreach-- Orlando Ellerby
  • Mississippi Forestry Commission - Fire wise Coordinator Leslie G. Blackwell
  • Mississippi Forestry Commission - Bill Kitchens
  • Natural Resource Conservation Service - Specialist IV Lee Smith and Kim Eaves
  • D.A.R.E. – Police Officer Tonya McWhirter
  • Wildlife Federation - Patricia Colley
  • Louisville High School Forestry Team Voc Tech - Instructor Mr. Bill Harrington
  • Physical Activity - Judith Ward and John Coleman
  • Winston County Extension Service - Sandra Jackson

Jean Harper, who serves as Youth Director for Winston County Self Help, was the coordinator for Field Day. The Winston County Chamber of Commerce honored Jean Harper with Farmer of the Award during 57th Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet in 2014. Regarding the youth group Jean stated, “The purpose of the group is to increase the youth’s knowledge of agriculture and for them to understand the value of agriculture in their daily lives.” Their purpose coincides with mission of Winston County Self Help Cooperative – “Saving Rural America.”

Field Day started outdoors with class groups rotating from one agency to another. As the weather changed, Field Day was moved into the gym. IT WAS A GREAT DAY!!
