ECCC Women’s Soccer, Softball Teams Named NJCAA Academic Teams of Year

News Release: DECATUR, Miss.—East Central Community
College’s women’s soccer and softball teams have been named best in the nation in their respective sports for academic excellence by the National Junior College Athletic Association for 2014-15.

The East Central women’s soccer program was named the NJCAA Women’s Soccer Academic Team of the Year and the women’s softball team was named the NJCAA Women’s Softball Academic Team of the Year.

East Central’s women’s soccer team, led by Head Coach Gray Massey, complied an overall 3.53 grade-point average to lead all community college soccer programs in the nation. It was the fourth such honor since the program began in 2005. The squad also had a successful season on the field in fall 2014, with their best record ever at 12-4-2 and first appearance in post-season play.

ECCC’s women’s softball team, under the direction of Head Coach
Kristin Chaney, compiled an overall 3.63 GPA to lead all community college softball programs in the nation. Chaney’s squad finished the season 48-14 during spring 2015 and second in the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship tournament.

Other ECCC teams recognized by the NJCAA for having an overall team GPA of 3.0 or above included women’s tennis, 3.45 GPA and 13th best in the nation; men’s baseball, 3.14 GPA and No. 33 in rankings; and men’s soccer, 3.04 GPA and No. 6 in the nation.

“We place a major emphasis on student success at East Central Community College in fulfillment of our 2020 Vision strategic plan,” said ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart. “Our No. 1 priority is to make sure we provide our students with every opportunity to succeed academically. I’m extremely proud of these student-athletes and their coaches for being winners both in the classroom and on the playing fields.”
