ECCC Women’s Soccer Wins, Men Fall In Double OT In Season Openers At Meridian

The East Central Community College women’s soccer team claimed a 2-0 shutout victory over Meridian Community College Friday afternoon, Aug. 21, while the ECCC men fell to the MCC Eagles 2-1 in two overtime sessions.
The matches played at MCC’s C.D. Smith Field were the season openers for both ECCC squads.

The Warriors fell in a heartbreaker in the opening match at Meridian when MCC’s Jordan Walton scored his second goal of the game at the 104th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give the Eagles a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

Freshman midfielder Devon Pitts out of George County High School scored ECCC’s only goal in the first half off a corner kick, with the assist from Omar Gutierrez of Mooreville High School and Chase Hughes of Southeast Lauderdale High School.

In the women’s matchup, East Central scored a goal in each half for the 2-0 win. Freshman forward Presley McLemore from Brandon High School and sophomore forward Tamia Cavett of Murrah High School netted goals for East Central.

The East Central men’s soccer team is back in action Tuesday, Aug. 25, when they travel to Wesson to take on Copiah-Lincoln at 6:30 p.m. The women’s and men’s teams will host Southwest on Thursday, Aug. 27, in Decatur. The women will face off at 1 p.m.and the men at 3 p.m.
