ECCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Sweep Rival Meridian

The East Central Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams both jumped out to early leads and never looked back in posting double-digit wins over nearby rival Meridian Community College in a Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges South Division doubleheader played Thursday, Dec. 3, in Brackeen-Wood Gym on the Decatur campus.

The ECCC Lady Warriors jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to an 86-55 win. The Lady Warriors improved to 5-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in the South Division, while the MCC Lady Eagles fell to 1-7 and 0-1.

In the men’s game, the East Central Warriors raced to a 20-5 first-half lead over the Meridian Eagles on the way to a 26-point 85-59 victory. East Central improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the South Division. Meridian fell to 4-3 and 0-1.

Alexia McDonald, a sophomore forward from Petal High School, led the Lady Warriors with 31 points, while guard Samantha Duncan from Oak Grove High School had 17 points. Guard Miracle Rushing out of Meridian High School had 11 and guard Kalybriah Haskin out of Olympian High School in Chula Vista, Calif., added 10.

Five Warriors scored in double digits in the men’s win, led by sophomore guard Ravion Henry out of Leake Central High School with 16 points. Keion Peoples out of Ridgeway High School in Memphis had 14 points and eight assists, and guard Isaiah Traylor from Tupelo High School, forward Tonzell Handy from Lanier High School, and guard Joel Baskin, a product of Meridian High School, each had 11 points. Handy had a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors hit the road next week for a pair of games each. The East Central teams will face South Division foe Jones County on Monday, Dec. 7, in Ellisville in games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 10, the Warriors and Lady Warriors will be in Booneville to play Northeast Mississippi at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
