East Central Basketball Teams Continue Winning Ways with Southwest Sweep

The series of streaks continued for the East Central Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams as they went on the road Monday, Jan. 25, to sweep the Southwest Mississippi Community College teams in MACJC South Division match ups in Summit.

The East Central Warriors won their fourth straight game with a 79-74 overtime victory over the Southwest Bears and are now in a four-way tie for the MACJC South Division lead.

The East Central Lady Warriors won their ninth straight game with a 71-61 victory over the Southwest Lady Bears and moved into a two-way tie with Jones County Community College for the MACJC South Division lead.

It was the fourth straight MACJC South Division doubleheader sweep for the East Central teams.

In the men’s action, sophomore guard Prince McDaniel poured in 29 points to lead the Warriors. The Pascagoula High School product was red-hot from the field hitting 6 of 7 two-point shots and 3 of 4 three-point shots in the win. He shot 82 percent for the game and also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

The Warriors had to battle back from an early 9-0 deficit. East Central took its first lead, 18-17, with 6:58 to go in the first half and moved out to a 35-28 halftime lead. The Warriors extended that lead to as many as nine in the second half before the Bears tied the score at 67-67 with five seconds remaining in the game to force overtime.

In the overtime, Southwest pulled out to a quick four point lead before East Central took control and scored the final eight points of the game for the win.

Sophomore guard Ravion Henry out of Leake Central High School added 15 points for the Warriors, sophomore center Randy Phillips of Lanier High School chipped in 13, and freshman forward Tonzell Handy, also out of Lanier, had 10.

The East Central Warriors improved to 10-6 overall on the season and 5-2 in MACJC South Division play. The Southwest Bears fell to 9-6 and 4-3 in the South Division.

In the first game of the evening, the East Central Lady Warriors never trailed in the win. The game was tied twice in the early going, before the Lady Warriors built a lead they would not relinquish. The lead was as many as 14 on two occasions in the third period, the last with less than a minute to go in that period. Southwest could get no closer than six points the rest of the contest.

Sophomore guard Miracle Rushing out of Meridian High School led all scorers with 21, shooting 67 percent from the field in the game. Sophomore guard Alexia McDonald out of Petal High School added 15 points and sophomore point guard Johnta’ Hughes of Hattiesburg High School had 11.

The East Central Lady Warriors improved to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the MACJC South Division. The Southwest Lady Bears fell to 13-3 overall and 5-2 the South Division.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors travel to Meridian on Thursday, Jan. 28, to face the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles and Eagles at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Next week the East Central teams host Jones County on Monday, Feb. 1, in Decatur at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and then travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast in Perkinston on Thursday, Feb. 4, for games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
