East Central’s Lady Diamond Warriors Remain Undefeated with Victories Over Shelton State

The No. 2 ranked East Central Community College softball team improved their overall record to 10-0 after sweeping National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Shelton State Community College in a doubleheader on the road Wednesday, Feb. 17. The Lady Diamond Warriors won game one 3-2 and game two 13-6.The Shelton State Lady Bucs, undefeated entering the doubleheader, fell to 5-2.In game one, the Lady Diamond Warriors scored all three of their runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Mahalia Gibson out of Oak Grove High School and an RBI single by Summer Lavender out of Canton Academy.




Pitcher Lacey Hill out of Kilbourne (La.) High School picked up the win for game one. In game two, East Central scored five times in the top of the sixth to build an 11-2 lead, and then were able to hold on for the win. An RBI single by Maegan Ellis out of Oak Hill Academy, an RBI single by Andi Hannaford out of Magnolia Heights School, and a two-run single by Katlyn Duke out of Neshoba Central High School powered the five-run sixth for East Central.

Gibson had two-run home run in game two as well, along with a single, four runs scored and three RBI. Lavender had a solo home run in the first inning. Caitlyn Aldous out of Petal High School had three hits. The Lady Diamond Warriors outhit the Shelton State 16-5 in game two.

Sophomore Chloe Thaggard out of Leake Academy got the win for game two. Both Thaggard and Hill improved to 5-0 on the 2016 season.

The Lady Diamond Warriors will travel to Meridian Friday, Feb. 19, for the Rush Invitational hosted by Meridian Community College.

East Central softball will return home for a doubleheader against Marion Military Institute Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Softball Park on the ECCC campus in Decatur at 2 p.m.
