ECCC’s Mahalia Gibson Wins MACJC Softball Player of the Week Honors

East Central Community College sophomore second baseman Mahalia Gibson is the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Player of the Week in softball for the week of February 15-21, it was announced today.The Oak Grove High School product batted .451 and hit four home run to help East Central to a 4-1 record last week. She hit two home runs in a win over Southwest Mississippi Community College in the Meridian Rush Invitational, driving in five runs. She also hit a home run in each game of a doubleheader against Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.
For the week, Gibson was 7-for-17 at the plate with 10 RBI and eight runs scored.She also pitched for the Lady Diamond Warriors and picked up the win against Bishop State Community College out of Mobile, Ala., in the Meridian Rush Invitational. Gibson gave up five hits and struck out seven batters in a 12 to 4 win.

The No. 2 ranked Lady Diamond Warriors only loss last week was 3-1 to defending National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Softball National Champion Chipola College (Fla.) in the Meridian Rush Invitational.ECCC is now 12-1 on the season.

East Central sophomore left fielder Summer Lavender from Canton Academy was both the MACJC Softball Player of the Week and the NJCAA Division II National Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 8-14.
