ECCC Softball Team Sweeps Baton Rouge On Sophomore Day

Powered by the bat of Mahalia Gibson, the No. 5 nationally ranked East Central Community College softball team swept Baton Rouge Community College in its final regular season home games for the 2016 season Saturday, April 16, on the Decatur campus.

A product of Oak Grove High School, Gibson racked up five RBI combined in both games on three hits, including a two-run homerun in game one and a three-run homer in game two.

East Central’s Lady Diamond Warriors improved its overall record to 36-7 overall and 18-6 in MACJC action.

In the 4-0 game one victory, ECCC scored two runs in the first inning on Gibson’s home run. The Lady Diamond Warriors then extended its lead adding one run in the second and sixth. 

Sophomore pitcher Lacey Hill of Kilbourne (La.) High School got in done in the circle pitching a shutout ballgame. She allowed six hits and struck out eight batters over seven innings of work.
An errorless game two featured ECCC putting up seven runs in the first inning en route to a 10-2 five-inning win.

East Central’s Lady Diamond Warriors scored in the first on a three-run home run by Gibson, an RBI triple by Katlyn Duke of Neshoba Central High School, an RBI double by Summer Lavender of Canton Academy, an RBI single by Latesia Davis of Newton County High School, and an error.

Duke was perfect at the plate in game two going 3-3.

ECCC extended its seven-run lead with one run each in the second, third and fifth innings.

Leake Academy’s Chloe Thaggard picked up the game two win allowing three hits and striking out one.

The East Central softball sophomores were honored following the conclusion of game two.

ECCC will play its final regular season doubleheader Tuesday, April 19, at Southwest Mississippi Community College at 1 and 3 p.m. in Summit.
