ECCC softball team sweeps Meridian in MACJC road action

The East Central Community College softball team was finally able to face Meridian Community College after several game changes due to inclement weather, and the Lady Diamond Warriors swept the doubleheader from MCC played Sunday, April 17, in Meridian.

East Central won game one 10-0 behind Kilbourne (La.) High School product Lacey Hill’s second straight shutout ballgame. ECCC won game two 9-4 to improve its overall record to 38-7 and 20-6 in MACJC play.

Hill got it done in the circle in game one, only allowing two hits and striking out eight batters in five innings.

Head Coach Kristin Chaney’s Lady Diamond Warriors scored six runs in the second inning on a grand slam home run by Mahalia Gibson of Oak Grove High School, an RBI single by Elizabeth Frey of Purvis High School, and a sacrifice fly by Andi Hannaford of Magnolia Heights High School.

It was the third straight game in which Gibson had homered, giving her 14 on the season. She racked up five RBI on three hits in game one.
Sophomore Summer Lavender of Canton Academy also blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to add two more to ECCC’s lead.

In East Central’s game two win, Hill also picked up the win in the circle after three two-third innings of work, allowing three hits and striking out four.

Sophomores Maegen Ellis of Oak Hill Academy and Katlyn Duke of Neshoba Central High School each picked up two RBI in the second game on two hits each.
