Memorial Day Service in Winston County

A Memorial Day Service was held on the front lawn of the Winston County Courthouse on Monday morning. Area residents gathered to observe the holiday and remember those who gave their life in service to their country. The flag was raised and then lowered to half staff and Taps was played as a symbol of respect.

A wreath was posted in front of the monument and flowers were placed by a number of individuals around the base of the granite column as an honor guard of veterans stood watch.

The monument at the entrance of the courthouse is inscribed with the names of those Winston Countians who lost their lives during WWI, WWII, Korea and the Vietnam conflict. Also honored were those local law enforcement officers who died in service to their community.

The names of sixty individuals who died in WWII are inscribed as well as four from Korea, fourteen from Vietnam and one from WWI.
