Mitchell brings to the office a wealth of experience, having served as Assistant District Attorney for approximately 4 years, over 20 years as the County Prosecutor of Webster County and serving as a City Prosecutor up until accepting the appointment by Governor Bryant. Coupled with the experience in the criminal area both as a Prosecutor and Defense Attorney, he also has extensive civil experience. Serving both as a prosecutor and defense attorney dealing with major felony cases, he understands the seriousness of the position as Judge.
Having served in the Military (i.e. United States Air Force, Mississippi Air National Guard, and U.S. Air Force Reserve for a period of 32 ½ years) combines experience with maturity. Judge Mitchell is a recognized combat veteran, having served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. After 4 years with the U. S. Air Force, he was honorably discharged and immediately joined the Mississippi Air National Guard, where he remained for the next 25 years, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. Judge Mitchell continued his distinguished military career when he was brought out of the Inactive Ready Reserve and reassigned to the United States Air Force Reserve as an Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer.
His responsibilities in this position included dealing with national disasters and threats dealing with weapons of mass destruction. He was assigned to the Adjutant General for the State of Mississippi. During his term of service, Judge Mitchell received numerous Military awards and decorations. He also served as a Judge for two 6 year terms on the Mississippi Court of Military Appeals.
