Announcement Of Candidacy By Judge Mitchell

Circuit Court Judge George Mitchell is pleased to formally announce his candidacy to continue service as Circuit Court Judge for the 5th Circuit Judicial District Place 2, having been appointed by Governor Phil Bryant to fill the office January 1, 2016, upon the retirement of Judge Clarence Morgan, III. In making this announcement Judge Mitchell stated that he has greatly enjoyed the privilege of being able to meet and serve the citizens of this district, which includes the counties of Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster and Winston.
Mitchell brings to the office a wealth of experience, having served as Assistant District Attorney for approximately 4 years, over 20 years as the County Prosecutor of Webster County and serving as a City Prosecutor up until accepting the appointment by Governor Bryant. Coupled with the experience in the criminal area both as a Prosecutor and Defense Attorney, he also has extensive civil experience. Serving both as a prosecutor and defense attorney dealing with major felony cases, he understands the seriousness of the position as Judge.

Having served in the Military (i.e. United States Air Force, Mississippi Air National Guard, and U.S. Air Force Reserve for a period of 32 ½ years) combines experience with maturity. Judge Mitchell is a recognized combat veteran, having served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. After 4 years with the U. S. Air Force, he was honorably discharged and immediately joined the Mississippi Air National Guard, where he remained for the next 25 years, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. Judge Mitchell continued his distinguished military career when he was brought out of the Inactive Ready Reserve and reassigned to the United States Air Force Reserve as an Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer.

His responsibilities in this position included dealing with national disasters and threats dealing with weapons of mass destruction. He was assigned to the Adjutant General for the State of Mississippi. During his term of service, Judge Mitchell received numerous Military awards and decorations. He also served as a Judge for two 6 year terms on the Mississippi Court of Military Appeals.

In making this formal announcement Judge Mitchell states, “I wish for all of the voters to know and understand that I would personally like to meet each one of you individually but that is an impossible task. I want to thank the voters of this District for the encouragement and cooperation that I have received so far in continuing to be your Circuit Judge, and I ask for your continued support and for your vote on November 8. Please vote Mitchell for Circuit Judge, Place 2.”
