The obituary card file project was inspired by the late Louis Taunton and his collection of files that were left to the Winston County Library. The Winston County Genealogical and Historical Society (WCGHS) expanded his effort into a collection spanning 23 years, 1993-2015. Members of the society worked diligently during the last four years on this project.

David Holder, President and Preservation Coordinator of WCGHS was instrumental in getting this project underway. He praised the members of WCGHS and community volunteers for their dedication and perseverance in locating, copying, clipping, organizing and preserving over 5,000 obituaries of Winston County. He also greatly acknowledged businesses and organization for their excellent cooperation in the project.

The obituary files and reference guide were presented to Beth Edwards, Librarian of the Winston County Library, Wednesday, January 26, 2017. The files are to be preserved as an important part of our local history, and to be made available to persons researching their family history. Pictured above are just some of the WCGHS members and volunteers who gave their time and energy.
