Time to Pay It Forward Winston County - Disaster Relief

In April, 2014 Louisville and Winston County suffered the greatest natural disaster in its history. Immediately our friends and neighbors, civic and church groups rushed to our assistance providing supplies, funds and support. There were too many individuals and organizations from across Mississippi and our nation to even attempt to name at this point.

Now there is another area of our country in desperate need of assistance. As I watch news and personal Facebook and Twitter feeds from the Houston area, I see situations that look all too familiar. I know that many in our community want to help – to provide assistance in any way that they can.

Unfortunately, there are those who seek to take advantage of the situation with scam sites and fake fund accounts. Many of us don’t know where to turn to provide financial assistance or where to gather supplies and be certain that they are actually going to those in need.

There is one organization that I am confident will work to do the right thing for victims of Hurricane Harvey. I know this because I saw them in action right here in Winston County. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) was here for the long haul. They were integral in relief efforts and were instrumental in the Winston Strong Program. 100% of your donations go directly to relief efforts.

Because there are so many fake relief sites floating around the internet, particularly Facebook, we at WinstonWebNews believe it is important that we provide information and links to legitimate aid services. If you are affiliated with another aid service, please donate as you see fit. Otherwise we recommend that your resources go to an agency such as UMCOR.

We offer the following information:

*To donate financially to relief efforts through UMCOR – click this link and log in. Donations can be made by check or credit card. (If paying by check – please write Acct# 901670 in the memo line)

* You can also make a donation by texting “RESPONSE” to 80888 and $10 will be added to your next phone bill.

* If you would rather donate supplies, the following links will indicate a list of supplies for health kits and a video providing instructions on how to assemble cleanup kits to be delivered to those in need.

Once assembled. supply donations can be dropped off at the First United Methodist Church in Louisville or you can drop them here at WinstonWebNews – 116 S. Columbus Avenue and we will see that they are delivered to the church.

Here in Winston County, we were blessed by the efforts of so many who came to our assistance in a time of need. Now is our time to “Pay It Forward.”
