Winston County Native Participating in Wrangler National Finals Rodeo This Week

Tyler Pearson
The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has had and will have some special interest for local folks as one of our own, Tyler Pearson participates in the national event.

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo began last Thursday and is carried nightly on the CBS Sports Network. The 10-round event will go on from Dec. 7-16 in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature the top 15 contestants in everything from bull riding to steer wrestling. Contestants are seeking $10 million in prize money at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds – one round on each of 10 consecutive days; each contestant competes once each day. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wrangler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score for that event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people.

Going into the event, Pearson was ranked in the top ten in the 2017 All American Steer Wrestling Tour Standings and is currently # 2 in the PRCA World Standings for earnings. In competition so far, Pearson has not disappointed. During Pearson's career-best regular season, he had several wins, including at the Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), and the Lawton (Oklahoma) Rangers Rodeo.

In preliminary rounds of the NFR, Pearson has two second place finishes and one third place. Tyler is the son of Larry and Cheryl Pearson.

The event is televised each evening through December 16th at 9:00 pm on the CBS Sports Network.
