Winston Co. Supervisors Meet for First Time in 2018

The Winston County Board of Supervisors met on Wednesday, January 3 for their first meeting of the year. The Board handled normal business items for the beginning of the year. Here are the highlights of the meeting:
  • The Board unanimously appointed Luke Parkes as Board President and Burr Warner as Vice President
  • Reappointed Hugh Hathorn as Board Attorney
  • Acknowledged the resignation of John Fair as part-time public defender and accepted the appointment of Zachary Madison for that position.
  • Approved the holiday schedule for county employees based upon the state of Mississippi’s holiday schedule.
  • Approved computer purchase for the County Coroner.
  • Accepted the bid from Hancock Bank for lease purchasing financing of two sheriff department vehicles
  • Received briefing from Neal Higgason, Warden of WCCRCF. Higgason stated that the facility was at or slightly above break-even status with current prisoner population and could see some increase in the population of state prisoners. He also made the Board aware of upcoming issues with the prison’s camera system and control board.
  • Received briefing from Jody Garrard, Fire Coordinator concerning the increase in fire calls over the holidays and during the extreme cold weather.

The Board met on Friday, January 5 to discuss the Justice Court Judge position.
