East Central Basketball Teams Pick Up Home Wins Over Delgado

The East Central Community College basketball teams closed out 2019 play with a sweep over visiting Delgado Community College Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Brackeen-Wood Gym on the campus in Decatur.

The ECCC Lady Warriors never trailed in defeating the Delgado Lady Dolphins from New Orleans 57-46 in the opener. The Warriors picked up a 97-72 win over the Dolphins in the men’s contest.

Sophomore guard Jariyah Covington (Starkville) led East Central with 16 points as the Lady Warriors improved to 5-5 overall. Sophomore forward KeiMoya Walker (Jackson, Murrah) added 11 points in the win. The Lady Dolphins fell to 3-9.

Six freshmen guards led the way for the Warriors in the men’s action as East Central improved to 5-5 overall. Tate Ryder (Hattiesburg, Oak Grove) scored 18 points with eight assists, Kareem Thompson (Florence) and Lee Cotton (Cleveland Central) had 14 each, Darien Newchurch (Terry) scored 13, Landyn Shows (Petal) had 12, and JaMichael Wilson (Rayville, La.) scored 11.

East Central hit 15 three-point shots in the win. The Delgado Dolphins are now 2-9 on the season.

The East Central teams return to action on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, when they travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River in MACJC South Division games. The women will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 p.m.
